Method · Technology and product
Core concepts
- Workflow definition: make start, finish and movement policies explicit
- Work in progress: manage concurrent work
- Flow metrics: observe throughput, cycle time and work item age
Application
Use this method to examine delays and bottlenecks in support, editing or development work with continuous incoming requests.
Limitations and jurisdiction
Putting work on a board does not resolve bottlenecks by itself. Simple averages across unlike work items can distort interpretation.
Editorial perspectives
- Finish work: prioritize completing existing work over starting more.
- Service response: use policies by request type to balance urgency and predictability.
