# Kanban and work flow

Define a workflow, manage work in progress and improve the movement of work.

 Method · Technology and product

## Core concepts
Workflow definition: make start, finish and movement policies explicit
Work in progress: manage concurrent work
Flow metrics: observe throughput, cycle time and work item age

## Application
Use this method to examine delays and bottlenecks in support, editing or development work with continuous incoming requests.

## Limitations and jurisdiction
Putting work on a board does not resolve bottlenecks by itself. Simple averages across unlike work items can distort interpretation.

## Editorial perspectives
Finish work: prioritize completing existing work over starting more.
Service response: use policies by request type to balance urgency and predictability.
