# Retrieval practice and long-term memory

Research examining how rereading and retrieving learned material from memory differ in their effects on later retention.

 Theory · Education

## Core concepts
Retrieval: recall material without consulting it
Delayed assessment: check memory after time has passed
Learning judgments: distinguish familiarity from actual recall

## Application
Include low-stakes recall questions and explanation activities and check retention after a delay.

## Limitations and jurisdiction
Do not apply the original prose-learning experiments directly to every skill or assessment setting. Review error correction and learner burden as well.

## Editorial perspectives
Recall: provide opportunities to explain without the material.
Further study: revisit gaps exposed during recall.
